Wheelchair Policy
Drivers are required by law and Connect Tnc policy to
transport riders who use foldable mobility devices. These riders are called
transfers meaning they can transfer from their wheelchair into the vehicle with
little or no help from the driver. Drivers are required to assist riders in the
storage of their mobility devices if needed unless driver is physically unable
to do so.
Mobility devices include the following:
· Foldable wheelchair
· Foldable walker
· Foldable scooter
· Canes, Crutches,
Wheelchairs and scooters must be securely situated in the
vehicle’s trunk or backseat, as not to obstruct the driver’s view. Drivers may
not deny service to or otherwise discriminate against individuals with
disabilities. Drivers who are found to have refused service due to a mobility
device will be removed from the platform for violating Connects Terms of
Service.
Passenger Assist
Passengers with manual wheelchairs, canes, crutches, and
walkers, sometime require assistance from their doorway to the vehicle or just have
the car door held open. The rider will inform you as to what level of help they
require. In all cases please be courteous and assist.
Wheelchair loading tips
Every device is different. Even if you have loaded a
wheelchair in the past, you may want to ask the rider for advice on disassembling
the wheelchair. Most wheelchairs will fit in your trunk or backseat, so
consider keeping a blanket in your vehicle to protect your seats.
If you are using a Van or Hatchback don’t place the
wheelchair flat in the trunk if a sudden stop occurs the wheelchair could fly
up to the front.
When possible, place the chair on the floor upright lodged
between the back of the front seats and backseat cushion and push the front
seats back towards the chair to lock it in.
If a wheelchair doesn't fit
Sometimes, larger wheelchairs just don’t fit. After making a
reasonable effort to load the wheelchair into the vehicle, drivers should
contact a Ride Rep to make other accommodation for the rider before cancelling
the trip.
